ashtanga yoyogi @omotesando(AYO) offers daily mysore style ashtanga yoga classes that are open to all levels.
The term “Mysore style” refers to the way the Ashtanga Yoga Method is taught by Sri K. PattabhiJois and his grandson R. Sharath in the city of Mysore, India. The ashtanga yoga system follows a therapeutic and progressive sequence of physical postures called asanas. This established traditional system is practiced daily, with rest on Saturdays, new and full moons. Each student is encouraged to memorize this sequence and develop a personal practice.
In mysore class each students is taught individually. In other words, he or she is given a one-on-one lesson within the group setting. The student is taught progressively according to his or her individual needs. For this reason, each student is encouraged to make a month-to-month commitment. Ashtanga yoga is an exact and detailed science that is learned over time. Therefore, an attitude of patience and perseverance is essential.
Consistent practice will help to strengthen muscles, align the bones, purify the nervous system and cleanse the body. Your body will become strong and flexible. Your mind will become calm and clear.
Beginner students are welcome to join class
In fact, the Mysore style method is ideal for people who are just getting started. New students are expected to make a minimum commitment of 3 times per week, although 5 times per week is suggested. They will be taught the first few basic sequences and their practice will be approximately 20 or 30 minutes. Students will progress further depending on their ability to memorize the sequence and gain a reasonable level of proficiency in the poses. Although flexibility, strength and coordination are helpful, they are not required. Anyone can enjoy the rewards of yoga, providing they are willing to make an effort.
